Operation Amistad: In a swift response to the natural disaster that has devastated parts of South America, India has officially launched Operation Amistad, a major humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) mission aimed at providing critical emergency support to earthquake-ravaged Venezuela.
Two heavy-lift Indian Air Force (IAF) C-17 Globemaster transport aircraft departed from the Hindon Air Force Station on Friday, carrying an Indian Army Field Hospital unit, elite medical personnel, and over 35 tonnes of emergency relief materials. The operation’s name, Amistad, translates directly to “friendship” in Spanish, underscoring New Delhi’s solidarity with Caracas.
A Lethal Double-Strike: Twin Quakes Leave Hundreds Dead
Operation Amistad: The humanitarian intervention comes after north-central Venezuela was rocked by two massive, back-to-back earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude. Striking just seconds apart near the Yaracuy state west of the capital city, Caracas, the powerful tremors caused widespread structural failure and chaos.
According to preliminary official estimates:
At least 235 people have been confirmed dead.
More than 4,300 individuals have sustained injuries.
Critical infrastructure, telecommunications, and power grids have suffered severe disruptions.
Emergency search-and-rescue teams are working around the clock to locate survivors trapped beneath the rubble of collapsed buildings, particularly in the coastal region of La Guaira and highly populated sectors of Caracas.
Inside India’s Relief Package: Mobile Hospitals and BHISHM Cubes
Operation Amistad: Recognizing the immense pressure on Venezuela’s local healthcare infrastructure, India’s relief package is heavily focused on emergency medical capabilities.
The payload sent via the IAF’s C-17 aircraft features a specialized medical contingent from the 60 Para Field Hospital, comprising 41 personnel including nine medical officers. The deployment includes:
Over 35 tonnes of medical equipment, essential medicines, and protective materials.
Two BHISHM Cubes (Bharat Health Initiative for Sahyog, Hita & Maitri).
What is a BHISHM Cube?
It is a state-of-the-art, indigenously developed modular medical facility designed for rapid disaster response. These compact, mobile units can be deployed anywhere and quickly unpacked to form a fully operational field hospital. It is uniquely equipped to handle advanced trauma care, intensive care monitoring, and emergency surgeries for up to 200 patients.
Leaders Reaffirm Ties Amid Crisis
Announcing the departure of the flight on social media, External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar reiterated India’s commitment to standing by its global partners. “India remains committed to supporting the people and government of Venezuela during this difficult period,” Jaishankar stated.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed deep grief over the loss of life and property, offering heartfelt condolences on behalf of the nation.
“Deeply saddened by the devastation caused by the severe earthquakes in Venezuela. On behalf of the people of India, I extend our heartfelt condolences to the Government and people of Venezuela, especially to the families who have lost their loved ones. We pray for the speedy recovery of those injured and stand in solidarity with all those affected.”

In response, Venezuela’s Acting President, Delcy Rodríguez, warmly welcomed the swift arrival of Indian aid. She described the gesture as a true reflection of the close bilateral cooperation and deep-seated spirit of solidarity that binds the two countries during times of acute crisis.
A Global Response to a Growing Tragedy
The journey from India to Venezuela spans a grueling 14,300 kilometers. Because the range of a fully loaded C-17 Globemaster is roughly 4,400 kilometers, the aircraft will make scheduled refuelling stops in friendly nations along the flight path to ensure the swift delivery of the life-saving cargo.
India’s prompt response joins a rapidly expanding international relief effort. A host of global powers, including the United States, Switzerland, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, China, and several neighboring Latin American nations, have similarly pledged financial aid, emergency supplies, or specialized canine search units.
By leading from the front with Operation Amistad, India further cements its expanding geopolitical footprint as a reliable, first responder in global disaster management, proving that its diplomatic philosophy of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam (The World is One Family) is backed by direct, real-world action.
