Gen-Z Pet Parents India: 70% First-Timers Driving ₹15,000 Monthly Spend on ‘Fur Babies’

Gen-Z Pet Parents India: The dynamic between Indian households and domestic animals has undergone a monumental shift in recent years.

Pets are no longer kept merely for security purposes or treated as casual household additions; they have elevated to integral members of the family, often affectionately referred to as “fur babies.”

From lavish birthday bashes to specialized health plans, urban India is witnessing a lifestyle transformation where pet parenting is taking center stage across metropolitan cities and smaller urban hubs alike.

According to media reports citing market intelligence from strategic consulting firm RedSeer and specialized pet platforms like Dogster and PetLoom, pet ownership across India is expanding at an impressive rate of 15% annually.

In 2025, the national domestic pet population stood at approximately 3.8 crore, with dogs accounting for more than 90% of the total count. Recent industry estimates project this number to reach nearly 4.5 crore pets in 2026.

Strikingly, data reveals that around 11% of pet-owning households now harbor at least four pets, while a massive 70% of all first-time pet parents belong to Generation Z.

Shifting Lifestyles, Urbanization, and Emotional Connections

Gen-Z Pet Parents India: The surge in pet parenting is heavily tied to broader socio-economic shifts occurring across the country.

According to media reports, rapid urbanization, rising disposable incomes, nuclear family setups, and the growing prevalence of solitary living in fast-paced cities are primary catalysts driving this trend.

A recent survey highlighted in media reports indicates that 56% of pet owners now view their animals as core family members rather than mere domestic animals.

This cultural evolution is no longer confined to major metropolitan centers like Delhi, Mumbai, or Bengaluru.

The trend has expanded rapidly into Tier-2 cities, including places like Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Indore, and Jaipur.

Reports from the India Brand Equity Foundation indicate that Indian families across different income brackets are showing an unprecedented willingness to spend on high-end products and services for their companions.

Furthermore, a growing sense of social responsibility has sparked a visible rise in animal adoption over traditional buying or breeding.

Monthly Pet Care Expenses Triple Over the Last Decade

Gen-Z Pet Parents India: Taking care of a pet in modern India has evolved into a dedicated monthly financial commitment.

Veterinary practitioners and pet care specialists observe that families are now allocating up to 10% of their monthly household income exclusively toward their pets’ health, nutrition, and overall well-being, effectively creating a brand-new domestic expenditure category.

According to media reports, the shift in spending patterns over the past decade is remarkable:

A decade ago, an average family spent between ₹1,000 and ₹3,000 per month on pet maintenance.

Today, standard monthly spending has climbed to between ₹5,000 and ₹15,000 for urban households.

Premium expenditure categories now include organic and tailored pet food, routine health check-ups, systematic vaccination schedules, professional grooming, nutrition supplements, medical insurance, spa treatments, daycare centers, pet-friendly hotel stays, and even formal final rites services.

When pet parents seek medical or nutritional advice, the primary query among modern pet owners has shifted from basic care to asking veterinarians, “What is the absolute best product available for my pet?”

Tier-2 Cities Drive Explosive E-Commerce Growth

E-commerce and quick-commerce data from platforms such as Instamart highlight a massive surge in pet care orders across 25 major Indian cities.

Bengaluru currently leads the nation in overall pet care expenditure, particularly in treats and luxury items, earning it a reputation as the pet care capital.

Meanwhile, Mumbai has seen the highest surge in cat-related products due to a steady rise in feline adoption.

However, the most dramatic demand spike is emerging from Tier-2 and smaller towns, where pet care order volumes recorded a staggering 96% year-on-year growth between mid-2025 and mid-2026.

According to media reports, search volume and order growth figures across these emerging markets include:

Dog Shampoo searches: Surged by 600%.

Dog Ice Cream searches: Jumped by 245%.

Bird Food orders: Grew by 178%.

Grain-Free Pet Food demand: Increased by 152%.

Rabbit Food orders: Rose by 130%.

Pet Wellness & Supplements: Saw a 42% growth in demand.

The Rise of Pet Fashion: From Birthday Outfits to Designer Sherwanis

Gen-Z Pet Parents India: Perhaps the most visible sign of this booming industry lies in the realm of pet fashion and luxury lifestyle products.

Founders of specialized pet fashion brands like PetLoom point out that consumer behavior has evolved from buying a single piece of clothing for a rare occasion to building extensive, multi-season wardrobes for pets.

According to media reports, pet owners are regularly investing in curated clothing collections that include festive wear, birthday dresses, winter coats, raincoats, and casual everyday wear.

During major cultural celebrations such as Diwali, Raksha Bandhan, Holi, Christmas, and family weddings, pet parents routinely spend upwards of ₹5,000 on custom-designed, hand-crafted outfits including tailored sherwanis for dogs.

This booming market highlights a permanent shift in urban Indian culture: pets are no longer treated as secondary household additions, but as beloved family members whose lifestyle, health, and comfort receive top priority.
