Vinesh Phogat: India’s hopes in the 2024 Olympics have suffered a significant blow with the disqualification of Vinesh Phogat. Until this morning, there was optimism that Vinesh would secure gold for the country. However, on August 7, the Indian Olympic Association announced her disqualification.
Disqualification Details
Vinesh Phogat was disqualified from the 50 kg wrestling category due to her weight being 100 grams over the limit. The gold medal event was scheduled for tonight, August 7. Despite extensive efforts by her team to bring her weight down, Vinesh was found to be just 100 grams over the 50 kg limit during the morning weigh-in.
Impact on the Final
Vinesh was set to face USA’s Ann Sarah Hildebrandt in the final. With her reaching the final, there were high expectations for her to win gold, making her disqualification a significant disappointment. Earlier, on Tuesday, Vinesh had secured a victory against wrestler Yusneilis Guzman, winning 5-0 in the semi-finals of the women’s 50 kg freestyle event.
Medal Implications
Due to Vinesh Phogat’s disqualification, no silver medal will be awarded in the women’s 50 kg freestyle wrestling category. As a result, American finalist Sarah Hildebrandt will receive the gold medal, and two bronze medals will be distributed for the event.
Support from Prime Minister Modi
In the wake of her disqualification, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has offered support to Vinesh Phogat. He encouraged her by acknowledging her as a “champion of champions” and boosting her morale during this challenging time.
