India’s Jay Shah has been elected as the new chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC). This is a matter of great pride for all Indians. Jay Shah, who has been the secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) since 2019, will take over this responsibility from Greg Barclay on December 1. Jay Shah’s journey in cricket administration has been quite inspiring. He has become the youngest chairman of the ICC at the age of 35. For the last four years, 62-year-old Greg Barclay of New Zealand was holding this post but this time he was not interested in contesting the elections.

Jay Shah Statement

Jay Shah emphasized on raising the standards of cricket around the world after being elected as the new chairman of the ICC. He said that he is grateful to the member boards of the ICC for reposing faith in me to take over this prestigious role of ICC Chairman. He further said that he wants to assure everyone that he will make every effort to raise the standard of this game around the world.

Powers and responsibilities

The chairman helps in running international cricket. He talks about cricket in important meetings held around the world and decides how to improve cricket. He ensures that big events like the Cricket World Cup and the T20 World Cup are organized properly. The chairman also helps in making rules about the behavior of the players and keeping cricket fair. He ensures that all the countries playing cricket are heard and the game is promoted everywhere. The chairman has important tasks that help in running international cricket smoothly.

Tenure and Salary

Although the tenure of the ICC Chairman is two years, he can remain in his post for up to six years. If we talk about salary, then no specific salary applies to the ICC Chairman. It is like a special honor.

Qualification Required

To become the Chairman of the ICC, the candidate must have certain qualifications and a selection process has to be followed. First of all, the candidates must be nominated by at least one full member of the ICC. This shows that the candidate has the support of a recognized cricket nation. Secondly, candidates should be experienced i.e. they should have significant experience in the same cricket administration. This experience helps them deal with the difficulties faced in international cricket. Candidates are usually selected from the 12 full members of the ICC, which includes Test match playing countries. The final selection is done through a vote by the ICC Board, which includes representatives of all full members. A majority is required for election.

How many Indians have become chairman so far

So far five Indians have become chairman of ICC. The first was Jagmohan Dalmiya. He was the first Indian to serve as ICC President from 1997 to 2000.
