Umar Khalid, accused in the conspiracy case related to Delhi riots, has got a big relief from the court. Delhi’s Karkardooma Court has granted him 7 days interim bail.
According to reports, Umar Khalid had sought 10 days interim bail to attend his cousin and sister’s wedding. However, the court has granted him 7 days interim bail from 28 December to 3 January.
Who is Umar Khalid?
Umar Khalid is a former student of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in Delhi. He is accused of being the alleged mastermind behind the Delhi riots in February 2020.
The riots broke out during the protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC). 53 people died and more than 700 people were injured in these riots. Umar Khalid was arrested by the Delhi Police in September 2020.
What Are the Allegations Against Umar Khalid?
Former JNU student leader Umar Khalid is accused of plotting the Delhi riots. He was arrested under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). The Delhi Police has also filed a supplementary chargesheet against him under several charges including murder, attempt to murder, rioting, unlawful assembly, sedition and criminal conspiracy.
Communal clashes broke out in north-east Delhi on February 24, 2020 after violence between supporters and opponents of the amended citizenship law. Following this, the Crime Branch and Special Cell of the Delhi Police questioned Umar Khalid about the alleged conspiracy behind the riots. His mobile phone was also seized. He was arrested after 11 hours of interrogation. Umar Khalid’s several bail pleas have been rejected earlier as well.
