BJP Sharpens North Bengal Focus: Union Home Minister Amit Shah intensified the Bharatiya Janata Party’s campaign in West Bengal with a rally in Sukna, placing the concerns of the Gorkha community at the centre of the party’s electoral messaging.
Addressing a large gathering, Shah accused the state government led by Mamata Banerjee of neglecting and marginalising Gorkhas, while promising corrective measures if the BJP comes to power.
BJP Vows to Reinstate Deleted Gorkha Names
During his speech, Shah claimed that several Gorkha names were removed from official records during a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise.
He assured that a BJP-led government would restore those names in electoral rolls. According to him, ensuring representation and recognition for the community would be a priority within months of forming the government.
Allegations of Longstanding Neglect
Criticising both the ruling Trinamool Congress and previous administrations, Shah argued that Gorkhas have faced years of injustice.
He said successive governments—including those led by Congress and the Left—failed to address the aspirations of people in Darjeeling and surrounding areas.
He further alleged that the cultural and historical identity of the Gorkha community has been undermined under the current regime.
Confident Pitch Against TMC
Expressing confidence in his party’s chances, Shah declared that the BJP is poised to form the next government in the state.
He called on voters to bring an end to Mamata Banerjee’s leadership, positioning the upcoming election as a turning point for the region.
Development Promises for North Bengal
Shah outlined an ambitious development roadmap for North Bengal. Key proposals included:
- Construction of a major highway linking Darjeeling to the Sundarbans
- Establishment of a new AIIMS facility in North Bengal
- A 500-bed cancer hospital
- Plans to set up premier institutions like IIT and IIM
He also highlighted ongoing infrastructure projects, such as the Sevok–Rangpo railway line, and improvements at New Jalpaiguri station.
Additionally, he mentioned future high-speed connectivity plans linking Siliguri with Varanasi.
Focus on Tea Gardens and Connectivity
Addressing concerns in the tea industry, Shah assured that tea estates would be protected from sale and revitalised under BJP governance.
He also spoke about expanding rail services, including the introduction of modern trains like Vande Bharat in the region.
Strong Stand on Infiltration
Touching on a sensitive issue, Shah raised concerns about illegal immigration, urging the audience to support stricter action against infiltrators, including Rohingyas.
The remarks appeared aimed at energising the party’s traditional support base.
