HMPV Virus Cases Emerge in India After China, 3 Children Infected in These States

After the outbreak in China, now cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV Virus) have been reported in India as well. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) detected two cases of HMPV in Karnataka during routine surveillance and one case in Gujarat.

The central and state governments in India have issued alerts and guidelines to officials about this virus.

HMPV Virus: Cases Found in Three Young Children

Two infants have tested positive for HMPV virus in Karnataka. According to available information, a 3-month-old infant with a history of bronchopneumonia was infected with HMPV virus and was admitted to Baptist Hospital. The baby was treated and discharged.

Similarly, an 8-month-old infant with a history of bronchopneumonia was also tested positive for HMPV virus at the same hospital on January 3. The infant is recovering now.

Also, the first case of HMPV virus has been reported from Ahmedabad in Gujarat, where a 2-month-old baby is undergoing treatment at a private hospital.

Who Is at Risk?

On Sunday, the Andhra Pradesh government shared an update about the HMPV virus. In a statement, the government mentioned that the virus spreads from person to person just like COVID-19.

It mainly affects children, the elderly and individuals with weakened immune systems. However, no case of human metapneumovirus (HMPV) has been reported in Andhra Pradesh so far.

HMPV Virus: Hospitals in Delhi on Alert

Delhi health authorities have also issued an advisory, directing hospitals to immediately report cases of influenza-like illness (ILI) and severe acute respiratory illness (SARI) through the Integrated Health Information Platform (IHIP). Isolation has been made mandatory for patients with respiratory issues.

To ensure accurate monitoring, hospitals are required to document cases related to severe respiratory illness and influenza. Additionally, hospitals have been directed to ensure the availability of oxygen, paracetamol, antihistamines, bronchodilators and cough syrups.

HMPV Virus Symptoms

A person infected with human metapneumovirus (HMPV) may experience symptoms such as fever, cough, difficulty breathing, rapid breathing, sweating and chills, headache, muscle aches, fatigue, and loss of appetite. HMPV infection is most commonly found in children under 11 years of age.
