Paris on High Alert: Paris was pushed into absolute anarchy on Saturday night. What was supposed to be a historic night of football celebration quickly devolved into a warzone.
Following Paris Saint-Germain’s (PSG) thrilling penalty shootout victory over Arsenal to retain their Champions League title, the iconic city of lights witnessed a dark night of arson, looting, and violent clashes between fans and law enforcement.
From Euphoria to Ashes: How the Night Unfolded
Paris on High Alert: The night began with pure ecstasy. As the final penalty hit the back of the net, the Eiffel Tower lit up in the vibrant red and blue colors of PSG. An estimated 20,000 ecstatic fans flooded the famous Champs-Élysées, waving flags, lighting flares, and chanting victory songs.
However, by midnight, the celebratory mood evaporated, replaced by a suffocating blanket of thick black smoke. The streets of Paris transformed from a victory party into a battlefield.
Key Figures of the Destruction:
Vehicles Torched: Over 260 vehicles were set on fire across the city.
Mass Arrests: More than 780 people were detained nationwide, with nearly 500 arrests in Paris alone.
Casualties: At least 57 police officers were injured, and 219 civilians sustained injuries, with eight currently in critical condition.
Midnight Madness: Tear Gas and Stadium Sieges
Paris on High Alert: The violence was not contained to just one area. Near PSG’s home ground, the Parc des Princes, around 5,000 fans had gathered to watch the game on giant screens.
According to police reports, a rogue group of about 150 individuals attempted to violently breach one of the stadium gates. When security personnel intercepted them, the crowd retaliated by hurling stones, heavy fireworks, and projectiles at the officers.
Law enforcement responded by deploying heavy barrages of tear gas to disperse the rioting crowds.
Meanwhile, opportunists took advantage of the chaos. Luxury storefronts and local businesses along the Champs-Élysées had their windows shattered, leading to widespread looting and theft. Some rioters were even found carrying illegal weapons.
“This unrest is absolutely unacceptable,” stated a furious Interior Minister, Laurent Nuñez, defending the police action but condemning the rioters.
Political Firestorm: “Only in France”
Paris on High Alert: The scale of the violence has triggered a massive political blame game in the country. Far-right leader Marine Le Pen took to social media platform X to launch a scathing attack on the current administration’s handling of public safety.
“Only in France can a football club’s victory spark riots,” Le Pen posted, adding that citizens feel forced to lock themselves indoors to escape the violence of what should be a joyful evening.
In response, Interior Minister Nuñez argued that the violence was not caused by genuine football fans. He emphasized that organized groups of thugs, who had no interest in the match, infiltrated the crowds solely to cause destruction. “Our response is extremely tough,” Nuñez warned.
Current Situation: A Tense Paris Prepares for the Victory Parade
Despite the scars of the previous night, Paris is trying to move forward. The city is currently under an intense security blanket as it prepares for PSG’s official victory parade.
The Parade Goes On: PSG players are still scheduled to parade the Champions League trophy near the Eiffel Tower and Champ-de-Mars today.
Massive Turnout Expected: Officials expect a staggering 100,000 supporters to attend the event.
Presidential Reception: French President Emmanuel Macron is set to host and congratulate the back-to-back European champions at the Élysée Palace.
High Security Alert: Over 22,000 police officers remain deployed across the country, transit routes have been altered, and specific metro stations remain closed to prevent a repeat of Saturday’s anarchy.
Paris remains on a knife-edge. While the players celebrate their hard-fought European glory, the city is left cleaning up the debris of a night where sports passion was hijacked by lawless violence.
