TRAGEDY IN CHONGQING: Massive Landslide Kills 8, Leaves 34 Missing Under Building-Sized Boulders

TRAGEDY IN CHONGQING : A catastrophic, rain-triggered landslide tore through a mountain community in southwestern China, leaving a trail of destruction and sparking a desperate, high-stakes race against time.

At least eight people are confirmed dead, and 34 others remain missing after a massive wall of rock and soil violently detached from a hillside in Pengshui County, completely engulfing more than 10 residential buildings.

The Black Friday Collapse

TRAGEDY IN CHONGQING : The disaster struck at approximately 9:08 a.m. on Friday along the outskirts of the sprawling Chongqing municipality. Early reports indicate that an alert community worker first noticed scattered falling rocks and unusual sounds echoing from the hills an hour prior, prompting a frantic, localized evacuation.

While over 60 residents managed to escape just in time, the mountainside gave way mid-evacuation, burying homes and trapping those who couldn’t break away.

“We heard the mountain screaming,” recalled one local resident, describing the deafening roar of 18,000 cubic meters of earth tearing down the slope.

Dramatic footage and photographs captured the terrifying aftermath along the Wujiang River. Enormous boulders lie scattered across the steep, terraced landscape, with the single largest rock measuring a staggering 3,000 cubic meters, visually dwarfing nearby multi-story apartment complexes.

The sheer force of the impact completely crushed the upper sections of some concrete structures, leaving vehicles half-buried and a 1-kilometer radius entirely cut off from water, electricity, and gas to prevent secondary explosions.

Disaster by the Numbers:

Debris Volume: 18,000 cubic meters

Mega-Boulder: 3,000 cubic meters

Evacuated: 1,100+ residents

Confirmed Dead: 8 people

Unaccounted For: 34 people

Rescuers Battle Relentless Rain and Unstable Terrain

TRAGEDY IN CHONGQING : More than 800 emergency personnel, alongside specialized K9 units and surveying drones, have flooded into the disaster zone. So far, ten survivors have been pulled from the rubble and rushed to the hospital, including two who remain in critical condition.

However, Mother Nature is refusing to cooperate. Persistent, heavy rainfall lashed Pengshui County from Friday night into Saturday morning, dumping nearly 19.2 centimeters (almost 8 inches) of water onto an already saturated and hyper-sensitive landscape.

The weather has created a logistical nightmare for rescue teams. The immediate danger stems from the building-sized boulders; search teams are currently forced to meticulously comb through the debris surrounding the rocks.

Once the immediate perimeter is cleared, engineers plan a highly dangerous operation: they will manually drill into the unstable 3,000-cubic-meter boulders, plant explosives, and blast them apart to search the cavities underneath.

Local resource officials warn that any minor vibration or shift could trigger a secondary collapse of the remaining loose cliff faces.

Emergency Funds Injected as Xi Demands Answers

In Beijing, Chinese President Xi Jinping issued an immediate directive, ordering an “all-out” search and rescue mission to locate the missing, while demanding a swift investigation into the exact geological cause of the structural failure.

To kickstart the massive recovery effort, the central government has mobilized a natural disaster relief fund of 50 million yuan (~$7.36 million) via the Ministry of Finance, alongside an additional 30 million yuan ($4.4 million) allocated by the National Development and Reform Commission. The funds are being rushed to the region to bankroll the emergency operations, support the 1,100 displaced residents, and begin the arduous process of rebuilding shattered public infrastructure.

Pengshui County, nestled in southeastern Chongqing where it borders Hubei and Guizhou provinces, is famous for its beautiful karst mountains and terraced agricultural fields. But those same steep, unpredictable slopes are now the focus of a grueling, heartbreaking recovery mission.
