Stuart Broad retired from all forms of the game in 2023 after Ben Stokes and Co drew the five-match red ball series of the Ashes to 2 all. Broad retired as the best pace bowler of all time in the cricketing history especially in the longer version of the game. Broad and Jimmy Anderson were the most lethal and destructive bowling partners in the history of Test match cricket.

The Ashes Test series in 2013 was started at Trent Bridge and the fifth Test match ended at Kennington Oval in London. England won that red ball series by a margin of 3-0. Sir Alastair Cook was the captain of that England side while Michael Clarke led the Aussies in that series of the red ball format.

The fourth red ball game of that series was played in Riverside Ground in Chester Le Street in the month of August 2013. In the 1st innings, England was bundled out for just 238 runs. Sir Alastair Cook was the top scorer with 51 runs. For the visitors, Aussies, Nathon Lyon picked up four scalps to his name alongside Ryan Harris and Jackson Bird, who took two wickets each.

In reply, the Aussies were marginally ahead of England. Their 1st innings ended with a score of 270  runs. Chris Rogers scored 110 runs and Shane Watson slammed 68 runs. Broad claimed a five wicket haul in the 1st innings. In the second innings, the home side England batted better than the 1st innings. Cook and Co scored 330 runs because of Ian Bell’s 113 runs and a few contributions from Kevin Pietersen’s 44 runs and Tim Bresnan’s 45 runs.

Due to those contributions, England managed to set a score of 299 runs as the target in front of the Aussies. The visitors were well placed at 168 runs for the loss of just two wickets. However, the spell from England’s premier fast bowler Stuart Broad ripped the entire batting lineup apart.

Broad picked up six wickets and conceded 50 runs, which allowed England to win this match as Australia were bowled out for 224 runs and England won this match by 74 runs. Stuart was the named as the player of the match in this game because of his wonderful bowling spells in both the innings of this red ball match.
