He passed away on the night of the previous Sunday in a hospital in San Francisco at the age of 73. Throughout his career, Zakir Hussain received numerous prestigious awards, including the Padma Bhushan, Padma Shri, Padma Vibhushan, and the Grammy Award.

Ustaad Zakir Hussain was an accomplished artist who introduced the world to the Indian percussion instrument, the tabla. He gained recognition worldwide as a tabla virtuoso. Throughout his music career, Zakir earned four Grammy Awards, three of which he received earlier this year at the 66th Grammy Awards. Among India’s most famous classical musicians, Zakir Hussain was honored with the Padma Shri in 1988, the Padma Bhushan in 2002, and the Padma Vibhushan in 2023.

The Cause of Zakir Hussain’s Death

According to reports, Zakir Hussain had been battling high blood pressure and heart-related issues. He had been in a San Francisco hospital for the past two weeks due to these complications. His family confirmed that his death was caused by Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis. During his hospital stay, his condition worsened, and he was admitted to the ICU, but unfortunately, he could not recover. Zakir Hussain’s wife, Kathak dancer and educator Antonia Minecola, and his two daughters, Anisa Qureshi and Isabella Qureshi, survive him.
