President Donald Trump is further intensifying his crackdown on illegal immigrants. Migrants from these four countries arrived in the US in October 2022 with financial sponsors. They were given a two-year permit to live and work in the country.

However, the Department of Homeland Security has now announced that these individuals will lose their legal status 30 days after the notice was published in the Federal Register on April 24.

Biden-Era Parole Ends

The move is expected to have a significant impact. During former President Joe Biden’s tenure, these immigrants were given a two-year parole, which has now effectively ended. Citizens of the four countries were allowed to enter the US via air travel with an American sponsor.

According to a news agency, the Department of Homeland Security has said that people who enter the US on parole without any valid legal basis must leave the US before their parole expiry date.

Trump Administration Moves to End Parole System

The humanitarian parole system has long been a legal mechanism used by US presidents to grant temporary admission to people from war-torn or politically unstable countries. However, citing widespread abuse, the Trump administration has decided to end the program.

According to a news agency, the Department of Homeland Security has said that people who enter the US on parole without any valid legal basis must leave the US before their parole expiry date.

The Trump administration’s decision to revoke the legal status of 500,000 immigrants could lead to mass deportations. However, it is unclear how many of those who entered under the parole program have received legal protection or status.

What Was Biden’s Decision?

In 2022, then-President Joe Biden launched a parole entry program for people from Venezuela. Later, in 2023, it was expanded to include people from Cuba, Haiti, and Nicaragua.
