AAP, which has governed Delhi for the past decade, faces a strong anti-incumbency wave as BJP seeks to capitalize on public dissatisfaction. While parties address issues across classes—from laborers to elites—GB Road remains one of the city’s most neglected areas. The sex workers here have grievances that require immediate attention, but political promises often fail to translate into actions.
Voices from GB Road: A Plea for Basic Amenities
Historically, GB Road’s women have been overlooked during elections. However, this time, they want their voices heard. In a recent media interaction, many women expressed that their votes are often undervalued. Living in dire conditions, 4-5 women share a single room, and 10-15 women live on one floor, relying on just one toilet.
Contaminated Water and Lack of Hygiene
One of the major issues highlighted was the unavailability of clean water. The women shared that dirty water flows through the taps, and basic sanitation is non-existent. They face constant power outages, which, though tolerable in winter, make summer unbearable. Poor ventilation and the absence of windows worsen the living conditions.
Living Amidst Foul Smells and Neglect
The rooms they inhabit are small and cramped, with sewage flowing through open drains right outside their doors, emitting unbearable odors. Women revealed that politicians visit the area during elections and make numerous promises, but these remain unfulfilled. No tangible improvements ever occur after the votes are cast.
Life Worse Than Hell
Many women described their lives as worse than hell. Broken water pipelines outside the area have been left unattended for years. The only water they receive is contaminated, leaving them with no choice but to use it. Their complaints are often ignored by authorities, who treat them as if they don’t exist.
As Delhi’s election frenzy intensifies, GB Road’s sex workers hope for a government that will address their plight. For years, they’ve endured inhuman conditions, but now they want action. Whether their issues will be resolved or remain a part of unfulfilled election promises is yet to be seen.
