Punjab Civic Body Polls 2026 Results: The ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has achieved a massive victory in the Punjab civic body elections, reinforcing its political dominance in the state.
Securing nearly half of all contested municipal seats, AAP’s performance leaves opposition parties trailing significantly behind. This election serves as a crucial urban litmus test ahead of the highly anticipated 2027 Punjab Assembly elections.
According to final figures released late into the evening by the Punjab State Election Commission, AAP captured an impressive 958 out of 1,977 municipal wards across 102 urban local bodies.
The landslide win underscores the party’s growing influence in Punjab’s urban centers, traditionally considered competitive ground for rival factions.
How Major Parties Fared: The Final Seat Count
Punjab Civic Body Polls 2026 Results: While AAP claimed the lion’s share with nearly 48% of the total seats, the fight for the second spot revealed shifts in Punjab’s changing political landscape.
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP): 958 Wards
Indian National Congress: 397 Wards
Independents: 251 Wards
Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD): 191 Wards
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP): 172 Wards
Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP): 7 Wards
The Congress finished as a distant second, unable to replicate past urban victories. Surprisingly, independent candidates put up a remarkably strong showing, outperforming established parties like the SAD and the BJP by winning 251 wards.
Battle for the Key Municipal Corporations
Punjab Civic Body Polls 2026 Results: Each Municipal Corporation in Punjab is divided into 50 wards. AAP secured outright dominance or emerged as the single largest party across several high-stakes urban centers.
In Barnala, AAP registered a dominant win by securing 36 wards, while comfortably taking Bathinda with 31 wards. The party also secured solid victories in Moga and Batala, winning 30 wards in each corporation.
In Mohali, AAP emerged as the single largest political force by capturing 26 wards.
On the other hand, the opposition managed to hold its ground in a few specific pockets. The Congress established a dominant position in the Kapurthala Municipal Corporation by winning 31 wards.
Meanwhile, the BJP found crucial breakthroughs in vital border and industrial belts, emerging as the single largest party in both the Pathankot and Abohar municipal corporations with 22 and 28 wards, respectively.
Voter Turnout Reveals Urban Engagement
The Punjab State Election Commission confirmed an overall voter turnout of 63.94%. More than 22.38 lakh citizens cast their votes across 3,833 polling stations statewide.
Interestingly, smaller towns showed a higher level of democratic participation than larger cities. Nagar Panchayats recorded the highest voter turnout at 76.18%, followed by Municipal Councils at 65.06%.
Major Municipal Corporations saw the lowest engagement, registering a turnout of 59.91%.
The official records highlighted that Municipal Councils possessed the largest voting bloc, with over 22.87 lakh registered electors, of whom nearly 14.88 lakh actively cast their ballots.
Reports of Scuffles and Clashes Mar Polling Day
The high-stakes election was not entirely peaceful. Polling day witnessed multiple reports of local violence, scuffles, and heated allegations of booth capturing among rival party workers.
In Raikot, a Congress candidate from Ward 4, Jagdev Singh Jagga, was severely attacked with sharp-edged weapons and had to be rushed to a private hospital in Ludhiana.
Meanwhile, fresh clashes erupted in Muktsar district’s Gidderbaha area, where supporters of AAP and SAD confronted each other directly at Wards 18 and 19.
The Shiromani Akali Dal formally approached the State Election Commission, accusing local AAP leaders of intimidation and assault. However, senior election officials categorically denied any official instances of booth capturing, maintaining that the integrity of the voting process remained secure.
Leadership Reacts to the Landmark Mandate
Following the announcement of the trends, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann praised the voters for choosing progress over divisive rhetoric.
“The people of Punjab have rejected the opposition’s politics of hatred. They have clearly voted in favor of our development, pro-people governance, and the work done by our administration over the past few years,” CM Bhagwant Mann stated.
AAP National Convener Arvind Kejriwal also extended his gratitude to the people of Punjab, characterizing the performance as “spectacular” and a massive vote of confidence for the party’s governance model.
With the 2027 state assembly elections less than a year away, this decisive urban mandate gives AAP a powerful head start over its fractured opposition.
