Shakeel Noorani Arrested: In a significant legal development within the Indian film industry, veteran Bollywood director and producer Shakeel Noorani has been arrested by the Mumbai Police following serious allegations of rape, drugging, sexual assault, and criminal intimidation made by a 33-year-old actor.
According to media reports, the 73-year-old filmmaker, best known for directing projects such as Bade Dilwala (1999) and Joru Ka Ghulam (2000), was remanded to police custody until August 12 by the Borivali Holiday Court following his arrest.
Details of the Incident and Legal Complaint
Shakeel Noorani Arrested: According to official media reports, the victim and the director first came into contact in 2016 at an entertainment award event in Lokhandwala, Mumbai.
The filmmaker reportedly offered to collaborate with her on an upcoming cinematic project and invited her to discuss the opportunity.
The police complaint states that the survivor subsequently visited Noorani’s residence in the Malwani area of Mumbai to review a film script.
According to the First Information Report (FIR), the director allegedly spiked her drink, causing her to lose consciousness, and sexually assaulted her while she was incapacitated.
Upon regaining consciousness, the victim alleged that the director showed her compromising video footage recorded without her consent.
He allegedly used this footage to blackmail her, threatening to release the video publicly on the internet if she approached law enforcement authorities or disclosed the incident to her family.
Allegations of Ongoing Abuse and Physical Harm
As outlined in media reports, the complaint alleges that the recorded material was used as a tool for recurring exploitation over an extended period.
The victim further alleged in the FIR that she was forcibly administered contraceptive medication on multiple occasions following the alleged assaults.
Reports indicate that the cumulative distress and incidents also led to a severe medical complication involving a miscarriage.
The matter surfaced publicly after the victim returned to Mumbai to seek medical treatment and subsequently filed an official complaint with local law enforcement.
Traced to a Hideout After 40 Days on the Run
Following the official registration of the FIR, Shakeel Noorani evaded arrest for approximately 40 days, according to police sources. The Malwani police initiated a multi-location search, which included checking properties tied to his immediate relatives in Mumbai.
Through technical intelligence and location tracking, law enforcement officials eventually pinpointed his location to a farmhouse in the Medha region of Maharashtra’s Satara district.
A joint operation conducted by the Malwani Police team alongside local police in Satara resulted in Noorani’s detention.
Following standard medical checks, he was formally placed under arrest and brought back to Mumbai for judicial proceedings.
Statutory Charges and Ongoing Investigation
The Mumbai Police have registered a criminal case under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The invoked statutory provisions include:
Section 64(2)(M): Aggravated form of rape.
Section 123: Causing hurt by means of poison or intoxicating substances.
Section 351(2): Criminal intimidation.
Section 88: Unlawfully causing a miscarriage.
During the court hearing, police investigators requested custody to retrieve digital evidence, examine the alleged electronic recordings, and determine whether similar offences were committed at other locations.
Taking these factors into consideration, the Borivali Holiday Court granted police custody until August 12.
Defense Representation’s Statement
Addressing the allegations outside the courtroom, advocate Vikas Singh Goar, representing Shakeel Noorani, denied all charges made against his client.
The defense maintained that the filmmaker has been falsely implicated in the matter, adding that the allegations remain subject to judicial scrutiny as the police investigation continues.
Further updates on the case are expected following the conclusion of the initial police remand period on August 12.
