Vaibhav Sooryavanshi IPL Record: The Bihar-born sensation guided Rajasthan Royals to a massive total in the IPL 2026 Eliminator against Sunrisers Hyderabad, earning high praise from legendary batsman Sachin Tendulkar.
A new era in T20 cricket officially arrived during the IPL 2026 Eliminator match between the Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, a 15-year-old batting prodigy from Bihar, played an innings that will be remembered for decades.
The left-handed opener dismantled the SRH bowling attack, scoring a breathtaking 97 runs off just 29 balls.
Smashed at an astonishing strike rate of over 334, Sooryavanshi’s innings included 5 fours and 12 sixes.
This masterclass not only helped Rajasthan Royals post a colossal total of 242/8 in their 20 overs but also shattered multiple long-standing Indian Premier League records, previously held by T20 legends like Chris Gayle, David Warner, and Suresh Raina.
Sachin Tendulkar and Cricket Fraternity Hail the “Next Big Thing”
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi IPL Record: Following his spectacular knock, compliments poured in from all corners of the cricketing world, most notably from the Master Blaster himself. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Sachin Tendulkar analyzed the technical brilliance of the teenager.
“Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s bat swing has been outstanding. What’s even more remarkable is how beautifully he clears his front foot to create room for balls aimed at his legs. This freedom allows him to play the way he does. That innings was nothing short of spectacular!” wrote Tendulkar.
Former Indian cricketer Mohammed Kaif also expressed his awe, calling Sooryavanshi a “miracle” and a “future star.”
Kaif noted that the entire cricket world, including opposition players and owners, stood up to applaud the 15-year-old “wonder boy” as he effortlessly hit jaw-dropping sixes.
Another World Cup-winning all-rounder dynamically labeled him the “Boss Baby” for completely overtaking the legacy of the original “Universe Boss,” Chris Gayle.
Shattering Chris Gayle’s Legendary T20 Records
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi IPL Record: Before this match, many believed Chris Gayle’s single-season six-hitting records would remain untouched. However, the young prodigy from Bihar has completely rewritten the narrative.
Most Sixes in a Single T20 Tournament: With his 12 sixes in the Eliminator, Sooryavanshi reached a total of 65 sixes in the ongoing IPL season, officially surpassing Chris Gayle’s historic record for the most sixes hit in a single T20 tournament.
10-Plus Sixes in an Innings: Sooryavanshi has now leveled with Gayle for the most instances of hitting 10-plus sixes in an IPL innings (4 times total). Remarkably, three of these instances came in this single season alone, making him the first player in IPL history to achieve this feat three times in one edition.
Powerplay Dominance: Overtaking David Warner and Sanath Jayasuriya
Sooryavanshi’s primary damage was dealt within the first six overs. During the Eliminator at Mullanpur, he hit 8 sixes in the powerplay, overtaking Sri Lankan legend Sanath Jayasuriya’s 2008 record of 7 powerplay sixes (set during a MI vs CSK clash).
Furthermore, the left-hander has accumulated 490 runs strictly within the powerplay this season, surpassing Australian icon David Warner’s 2016 record of 467 powerplay runs for SRH.
He now has 5 fifty-plus scores in the powerplay, putting him just one behind Warner’s career record of 6.
The Statistical Breakdown of a Historic Knock
Sooryavanshi reached his half-century in just 16 balls, matching Suresh Raina’s iconic 2014 record against Punjab Kings for the joint-fastest fifty in an IPL knockout or playoff match.
Key Stats from Sooryavanshi’s 97-run Innings:
Runs Scored: 97
Balls Faced: 29
Strike Rate: 334.48
Boundaries: 5 fours, 12 sixes
Knockout Record: His 12 sixes are the most ever hit by a batsman in an IPL playoff match, overtaking Shubman Gill’s 10 sixes against MI in 2023. This is also the highest number of sixes in an IPL innings by an Indian player.
His 97-run contribution is the second-highest individual score for Rajasthan Royals in an IPL playoff match, trailing only Jos Buttler’s unbeaten 106 against RCB in 2022.
An Unprecedented IPL Season for an Uncapped Player
Sooryavanshi’s overall numbers for the IPL 2026 season highlight a historic run. In 15 innings, he has amassed 680 runs at an average of 45.33 and a staggering strike rate of 242.85.
His season includes one century (highest score of 103) and four half-centuries. Out of the 280 balls he has faced this year, he has hit 55 fours and 65 sixes meaning he hits a boundary every 2.3 balls and clears the fence every 4.3 balls.
With 680 runs, he has eclipsed his opening partner Yashasvi Jaiswal’s 2023 record (625 runs) for the most runs scored by an uncapped batsman in a single IPL season.
He also becomes the youngest player in cricket history to cross the 600-run mark in an IPL season.
Prior to his arrival, no player in T20 history had ever managed to score over 600 runs in a single tournament while maintaining a strike rate above 200.
Supported by Dhruv Jurel’s rapid 50 off 21 balls, Sooryavanshi’s historic performance successfully propelled RR to 242/8 despite a fighting bowling spell from SRH’s Praful Hinge (3/54), cementing the 15-year-old’s name firmly in the history books.
