Bengal Election: Assembly elections held on April 23, 2026, in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu witnessed an impressive voter turnout despite extreme heat conditions.
Large numbers of voters stepped out to cast their ballots, reflecting strong public participation and enthusiasm in both states.
High Overall Polling Percentage
By the afternoon, voting percentages had surged significantly in both regions. West Bengal recorded over 78% polling, while Tamil Nadu reached around 70%, indicating a robust democratic response from citizens.
District-wise Voting Trends in West Bengal
West Bengal saw consistently high turnout across districts. Samsherganj emerged as the top-performing constituency with 87.53% voting.
South Dinajpur recorded 81.49%, while Kalimpong reported the lowest turnout at 74.07%. Other districts such as Bankura (79.88%), Birbhum (80.22%), Cooch Behar (79.26%), and Paschim Medinipur (81.07%) also showed strong participation, reflecting widespread voter engagement.
District-wise Voting Trends in Tamil Nadu
Tamil Nadu also registered steady voting percentages across districts. Erode (75.61%), Karur (76.08%), Tiruppur (75.38%), and Dharmapuri (74.68%) were among the higher-performing regions.
Meanwhile, Kanyakumari recorded relatively lower participation at 61.95%, with Chennai at 68.13% and Madurai at 67.15%.
Violence and Unfortunate Incidents Reported
Despite the high turnout, the polling process in West Bengal was marred by reports of violence and a tragic incident.
In the Malatipur assembly segment, a woman voter collapsed and died at a polling booth in Kandaran.
According to her family, she fainted just before casting her vote and passed away on the spot, leading to panic at the booth.
Tense Atmosphere in Some Areas
Additionally, incidents of clashes and crude bomb explosions were reported from various parts of the state, leaving several people injured.
These incident added tension to an otherwise enthusiastic voting process, highlighting the challenges faced during large-scale elections.
