Bengal Elections: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday said the ongoing West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026 are critical not only for West Bengal but for the entire eastern and northeastern region of India.
He also expressed strong confidence in a sweeping victory for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
BJP Predicts Strong Performance
Speaking at a press conference in Kolkata, Sarma said the response in the first phase of polling suggests a major shift in the political atmosphere.
He claimed the BJP could win over 200 seats, describing the momentum as a “tsunami” in favor of the party.
Targets Mamata Banerjee Government
Sarma launched a sharp attack on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her party, Trinamool Congress (TMC).
He accused the state government of encouraging illegal infiltration due to vote-bank politics and alleged that it has not supported border fencing efforts along the Bangladesh border.
Raises Concerns Over Demographic Changes
Highlighting what he called a serious concern, Sarma warned that continued infiltration could lead to significant demographic changes across several states.
He noted that the India-Bangladesh border spans West Bengal, Assam, Tripura, Meghalaya, and Mizoram, making it a region-wide issue.
He further claimed that demographic shifts are already visible in Assam and cautioned that similar trends could impact West Bengal and nearby states in the coming years.
Appeal to Voters
Urging voters to participate in the next phase of polling, Sarma said that forming a BJP government in West Bengal is essential for the broader interests of eastern India.
Election Schedule
Polling in West Bengal began on April 23, with the next phase scheduled for April 29. The results for both West Bengal and Assam will be declared on May 4.
