Nepal-Tibet Border Floods: The serene Himalayan landscapes of Nepal turned into a scene of utter devastation on Wednesday as massive flash floods tore through the Rasuwa district near the Tibet border.

Triggered by heavy waters surging into the Bhote Koshi river and suspected to be linked to a glacial lake outburst, the disaster has left at least nine people dead, numerous missing, and critical infrastructure completely obliterated.

The shockwaves of this natural calamity extend far beyond the immediate disaster zone. With foreign tourists, hydropower workers, and hundreds of Kailash Mansarovar pilgrims caught in the chaos, neighboring India has also sprung into emergency preparedness mode, opening barrage gates in Bihar and deploying disaster response teams as a precaution.

Kailash-Bound Pilgrims Cut Off: Nearly 400 travelers heading to Tibet for the sacred Kailash Mansarovar Yatra lost contact after the floods hit. This group includes 390 pilgrims, among them 93 Nepali citizens. Travel operators report zero communication with most of the group.

South Korean Workers Affected: South Korea’s Foreign Ministry and local reports confirmed that at least eight South Korean nationals working at a hydropower plant are missing. Another 10 workers remain stranded, awaiting safe weather for helicopter evacuation.

Foreign Tourists Missing: According to the Nepal Tourism Board, a preliminary list of 384 missing travellers includes 105 Indian nationals and 37 non-resident Indians. Tourists from the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Malaysia, and South Africa are also among the unaccounted-for individuals.

High-Level Coordination: Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke directly with Bihar leadership to review flood safety measures, assuring full central support.

Bihar Prepares for Floods: Preemptively responding to the crisis, authorities in Bihar opened all 36 gates of the Gandak barrage at Valmikinagar. District magistrates have been directed to use public address systems for evacuations, while National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams deploy to vulnerable zones.

Warnings and What Lies Ahead

Local authorities and leadership have issued earnest pleas for vigilance. Nepali leaders have strongly advised residents living along lower river basins, including Nuwakot, Dhading, Chitwan, and Gorkha, to move to higher ground immediately.
