South Africa Mass Shooting: A quiet Tuesday night turned into a scene of terror when a heavily armed gang launched a coordinated assault on the Jumpers informal settlement in Cleveland, east of Johannesburg.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) confirmed on Wednesday morning that at least 12 people were killed and nine others injured in the mass shooting.
Authorities have launched a massive manhunt for more than 10 suspects who carried out the deadly ambush before fleeing the scene.
The Midnight Ambush: How the Attack Unfolded
South Africa Mass Shooting: According to police reports, the horror began at approximately 11:10 PM on Tuesday. The attackers arrived at the settlement, located near an abandoned gold mine, about six kilometers east of the Johannesburg city center, in a white Toyota Quantum.
The assault was highly coordinated. Instead of rushing in from one side, the gunmen split into smaller groups and entered the informal settlement through two separate entrances simultaneously, cutting off escape routes for the residents.
“The suspects allegedly entered the informal settlement through both entrances and walked around the area, shooting at residents and community members at multiple locations,” a police spokesperson told AFP.
After unleashing a hail of bullets on unsuspecting community members, the gunmen ran back to their vehicle and sped away.
Casualties and the Chaos Aftermath
South Africa Mass Shooting: Emergency services and police rushed to the scene following frantic distress calls from terrified residents. They were met with a gruesome scene spread across various locations within the settlement.
Initial Toll: First responders initially found 11 people dead on the spot, consisting of eight men and three women.
Rising Fatalities: The death toll later officially rose to 12.
The Injured: Nine other residents were found with varying degrees of gunshot wounds. Emergency workers rushed them to nearby hospitals, where several remain in critical condition.
Illegal Mining Feud Suspected as Police Launch Massive Manhunt
While the exact motive behind the massacre is still being officially investigated, authorities strongly suspect the bloodshed is linked to the area’s notorious illegal mining syndicates.
The proximity of the Jumpers settlement to an abandoned gold mine has made it a hotspot for violent turf wars between rival gangs.
As of Wednesday afternoon, no arrests have been made. However, SAPS has deployed specialized tactical units to the Cleveland area to gather forensic evidence, secure the neighborhood, and track down the killers.
South Africa’s Ongoing Battle with Violent Crime
This latest mass shooting highlights the severe security challenges facing South Africa. The country continues to grapple with high rates of violent crime, gang-related warfare, and organized criminal activities.
Informal settlements, which often lack adequate policing and infrastructure, frequently bear the brunt of this extreme violence.
Police have urged anyone with information regarding the white Toyota Quantum or the identity of the suspects to come forward immediately to assist with the ongoing investigation.
