Yamuna Expressway Accident: 4 Killed, Multiple Injured in Fatal Bus-Trailer Collision Near Mathura

Must read

Yamuna Expressway Accident: A devastating road accident on the Yamuna Expressway in the early hours of Monday has once again highlighted the growing concerns over nighttime travel and overspeeding.

A double-decker Volvo sleeper bus, carrying around 65 passengers from Lucknow to Delhi-NCR, rammed into a moving trailer truck from behind.

According to initial police reports and administrative officials, the collision resulted in four fatalities on the spot, while the number of injured passengers varies between 19 to 27 across different official and medical accounts, with several individuals remaining in critical condition.

How the Accident Unfolded: A Fatal Midnight Journey

Yamuna Expressway Accident: The incident occurred between 3:30 AM and 4:00 AM near milestones 112 and 113, falling under the jurisdiction of the Raya Police Station in Uttar Pradesh’s Mathura district.

The sleeper bus, operated by Gola Bus Service, was heading towards Noida/Delhi.

According to Mathura SP (Rural) Suresh Chandra Rawat, a trailer truck laden with grit stone was moving in the third lane when the speeding Volvo bus crashed into it from behind.

The impact of the crash was so massive that the front section of the double-decker bus was completely mangled, compressing inward by nearly eight feet (two to two-and-a-half meters).

Terrified passengers, most of whom were asleep at the time, were violently thrown from their berths.

The severe crushing of the cabin trapped multiple passengers and the crew within the wreckage, causing immediate panic and chaos on the expressway.

Rescue Operations and Emergency Response

Yamuna Expressway Accident: Local villagers and commuters immediately alerted the police control room. Given the severity of the accident, a massive rescue operation was launched involving:

Local police units from Raya Station

Teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF)

Fire Service personnel

8 PRB vehicles and 12 ambulances

Because the front of the bus was heavily crushed, emergency responders had to use gas cutters to slice through the metal chassis and windows to extract trapped passengers.

Survivors recounted that some passengers managed to escape by breaking the glass of the rear emergency exit.

To ensure that the critically injured received immediate medical attention, the district administration quickly established a green corridor from the accident site to the Mathura District Hospital, ensuring ambulances could travel without traffic delays.

Verifying the Toll: Casualties and Injured Survivors

Due to the chaotic nature of the accident site, local media reports and initial official statements provided slightly differing figures regarding the injured. However, the verified details from police and hospital authorities outline the following impact:

The Deceased: Four individuals lost their lives on the spot. According to SSP Shlok Kumar, the casualties include the bus driver (identified as Upadesh Yadav), the conductor, the cleaner, and one passenger.

The Injured: Between 19 and 27 passengers sustained injuries. Dr. Sushil Kumar of the Mathura District Hospital confirmed that while the majority of patients are stable, two to three passengers suffered severe injuries, including thigh bone fractures, and have been referred to a higher medical facility in Agra or sent onward to Delhi.

The Unhurt: Around 34 to 35 passengers escaped with minor or no injuries. The police arranged alternative buses to safely transport them to their destinations.

Eyewitness Accounts: Terror on the Expressway

Survivors shared chilling details of the moments leading up to the crash. Preeti Srivastava, a passenger travelling to Faridabad with her husband and two children, mentioned that the bus had stopped at a roadside eatery (dhaba) about half an hour before the accident.

Shortly after resuming the journey, the bus began to sway unpredictably due to high speed before finally colliding with the trailer.

Another passenger, Jitesh Kumar Srivastava, an employee of the Panchayati Raj Directorate who was travelling to Delhi, expressed the sheer suddenness of the impact, noting that those seated in the front rows bore the maximum brunt of the collision and stood no chance to react.

Investigating the Cause: Driver Fatigue or Oversight?

Preliminary investigations by the police point towards high-speed driving and driver negligence as the primary causes of the crash.

However, local statements and senior police observations also suggest an angle of driver fatigue or the possibility of an unauthorized person at the wheel during the late-night shift, which is currently a subject of deeper inquiry.

Expressing deep sorrow over the tragic loss of lives, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath took cognisance of the incident.

He directed the Mathura district administration to ensure the best possible medical care for the injured and requested officials to provide all necessary assistance to the families of the victims.

Normal traffic flow on the Yamuna Expressway was restored within a few hours after the damaged vehicles were safely towed away.
